Kano State's Deputy Governor, Resigns From Office

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, on Sunday resigned from office, having been elected on the platform of the ruling, All Progressives Congress.

Earlier in the week, Abubakar had petitioned the police and State Security Service, (SSS), over threat to his life and plans by the state government to stage a rally against him.

He claimed that his resignation was necessary due to disrespect of his office and unjust treatment by the governor.

Abubakar also said, that he resigned his position following hints that 31 members of the state House of Assembly had already signed his impeachment notice, scheduled to be tabled before the House on Monday for deliberations.

He explained to the Governor that he had made all efforts by drawing the Governor’s attention to issues that would avoid drifting into the kind of unnecessary crises the state is facing today but all to no avail.

In a letter dated August 1, 2018, addressed to Kano State Governor Abduallahi Umar Ganduje, Abubakar said, “I would have desired to remain up to the end of our tenure in order to fulfill the aspirations and expectations of the good people of Kano State as expressed in our joint ticket in 2015.
”But with the current and persistent irreconcilable differences on matters relating to governance and government operations, personal opinions and the concept of, and respect for democratic ideals and values, it would be unfair to my conscience, to the good people of Kano State and to you as the head of the Government to continue to remain in my position as the Deputy Governor.”
Abubakar will join his political godfather, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, who defected to the Peoples Democratic Party from the ruling APC.
A new deputy governor may emerge soon as a meeting is currently ongoing between the executive, legislatures and other senior members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is currently holding behind closed door.
